Michael Brown has stated that Tottenham fans ‘still have this way’ that they want their team to play ‘attractive football’ amid the appointment of Antonio Conte, as he told the Football Show on Sky Sports (01/11/21 at 10:25 am).
Tottenham sacked Nuno Espirito Santo on Monday and a lot was made about his style of play during his brief tenure at the club.
It was an unforgettable four months from Nuno, whose defensive style, didn’t sit well with the Spurs faithful and they made their feelings clear towards their now departed manager, as was proven against Manchester United.
Another defensive-minded coach in Conte has walked through the doors, although he is a lot more demanding than the man he will replace and has had great success in Italy and England over the years.
Ex-Spurs midfielder Brown shared his thoughts on Conte’s style compared to what the fans of the North London club want.
“What’s difficult with Conte is he puts that back three in,” said Brown. “Defensively, he shores it up and makes it very, very solid. And hard to beat.
“Bu the Spurs fans still have this way that they want attractive football. They want flair. They want wide players. They want exciting players on both sides of the pitch.
“But ultimately, it’s about the results now. They tried with Jose Mourinho in a different format and a different way.
“Possibly the recruitment and the level of players they have got will prove to be difficult. They have to get better players. We know that. The likes of Conte can attract better players than Spurs have got.”

Just like Jose Mourinho, the Spurs faithful won’t care one jot if they see their team being that more defensive-minded, as long as they win.
At the end of the day, winning football matches in itself is attractive enough, as is winning trophies and securing Champions League football.
Plus, Conte’s team play with a lot more aggression, efficiency and hard-hitting nature than what Nuno demands, so that in itself will sit very well with Spurs fans.
At the end of the day, Tottenham’s strength is upfront, and if Conte can get the best out of the likes of Heung-Min Son and Harry Kane, like Mourinho did, then all will be rosy in the garden.
