Jose Mourinho has suggested via Football London that Gedson Fernandes might be leaving Tottenham Hotspur early.
The 21-year-old hasn’t played a single minute of Premier League football this season and hasn’t even been included in a squad since September.
Gedson, who joined Spurs on loan from Benfica last January, has only managed 63 minutes of senior football in the 2020-21 campaign and that came in a League Cup win over Chelsea three months ago.
According to A Bola, Tottenham and the Portuguese club have now agreed to terminate the agreement.
Mourinho was quizzed about the situation – which he referred to as ‘sad’ – on Friday and although he refused to confirm a return to Lisbon, he did heavily hint that he’d be leaving North London next month.
The Portuguese coach said: “The situation is sad because he was out of the Europa League list and by being out of that list reduced immediately a chance of nine matches that we already played in the Europa League, where we had five substitutions where we rotated the players a lot and we can bring to the bench 12 players. So these six months become really, really bad for us and for him.
“Hopefully better days will come for him and they will come for sure, with us or without us, but better days will come for sure.”
Mourinho’s right in saying that it certainly is sad, but it is important all the same.
For the sake of Gedson’s development, spending the next six months on the bench at Tottenham is going to do absolutely nothing for him, and he’s clearly far too advanced for Under-23 football.
Going back to Benfica and hopefully returning to senior football there makes total sense.
