Rory Smith hit out at Chris Sutton for using the argument that Steven Gerrard only won one in nine trophies at Rangers after moving to Aston Villa.

The New York Times journalist told BBC Radio 5 Live Sport that is ‘the single most ridiculous’ thing Sutton can say.

But the ex-Villa striker also added that the narrative in England is that Gerrard did an ‘incredible’ job at Ibrox, but he thinks it’s far from that.

Gerrard helped the Gers end Celtic’s dominance in Scotland last season, when he ended ten-in-a-row and guided his side to an unbeaten season.

It’s what Gerrard was tasked to do when he was first handed the key to Ibrox.

But some have pointed towards other areas of Gerrard’s reign and how he struggled during other domestic matches.

That’s an argument Sutton was trying to use when talking about Gerrard, as he also shared his thoughts on the former midfielder having to make this step to Villa.

“He had to have this step, didn’t he?” said Sutton. “He was a rookie when he first went to Rangers.

“We also understand how Scottish football is viewed by many down south. I think the job he has done in Europe. Truth is that it’s been a mixed bag with the job he’s done.”

Rory Smith then asked: “Are you going to use 1 in 9 trophies? (Sutton then said that he will). I have heard this a lot. That is the single most ridiculous way of winning the league title. It’s nuts.”

Sutton responded: “One trophy out of nine is that good enough?”

Rory Smith added: “One league title out of three when they came in, yes (it’s good enough).”

Sutton then responded: “And has he failed in terms of winning cups? This narrative down south that Gerrard has done an incredible job at Rangers. He has done a pretty decent job. Brendan Rodgers won seven out of seven. That’s incredible. Callum Davidson won two trophies at St Johnstone in the same period.”

Whilst Gerrard was given the time to build his Rangers side and win that all-important Premiership title, a certain Giovanni van Bronckhorst won’t be given those same pleasures.

The Dutchman was appointed as Gerrard’s replacement on Thursday and he is now tasked with trying to retain the title.

Whilst last season’s was one of the biggest of them all, the one during this campaign also has important significance because of the pot of Champions League gold at the end of it.

Celtic had their troubles last season, but they are slowly but surely picking up and playing some entertaining football.
