Must do better: Rio Ferdinand, and Patrice Evra have both been sloppy and haphazard in defence all to regularly.
Manager: Sir Alex gambled by not spending big on a central midfielder in the summer, and his recent statement that he does not intend to buy in January will infuriate fans.
Grade: B
Verdict: Where to start? United’s season can be categorised into two phases, pre 6-1 defeat, and post 6-1 defeat. Before the landmark loss to City they were playing freeflowing football, largely inspired by young Tom Cleverley, which curtailed after his injury. During the first half their midfield was left far too open in many games, and City exploited it ruthlessly.
There have been highlights, a record 8-2 win over Arsenal and 3-1 win against Chelsea, but since the heavy defeat they have gone back to basics, winning games 1-0 in a more pragmatic style, until an unfortunate home draw with Newcastle. Nemanja Vidic’s return has played a key part in a settled defence, and David de Gea is too settling well after initial nerves.
For United their season almost depends on going to Basle in the Champions League and avoiding defeat, otherwise they will be in the Europa League for the first time in their history.
