Scottie Scheffler is the top golfer in the world, and he’s capable of pulling off shots most players wouldn’t even attempt.
After seeing him up close over the past year, Ryan Gerard got hooked on trying to master one particular shot that Scheffler has down to a science.
He’s already picked up another win this season and has now racked up 20 victories since February 2022, including four majors.
Ryan Gerard describes the Scottie Scheffler shot he can’t stop practising

Ryan Gerard, who played alongside Scottie Scheffler during the final round of the Texas Children’s Houston Open in 2025, seems to have taken a lot away from that experience.
The world number one has influenced a shot that Gerard is keen to master himself, as he told The Golf Channel this week.
“A lot of guys, when they take speed off a golf club, the ball flight comes down,” said Gerard.
“Scottie hits this shot with this smooth knockdown swing, but he launches it higher, spins it more, and it bridges the gap between two full numbers. I’ve kind of been obsessed with this shot since I played with him the final round of Houston last year, and I’ve gone about learning how to hit it.
“The ball is a little more forward in my stance, I choke down on it and feel like I’m slowing down through the ball and speeding up after.
“That launches it higher with less speed. I don’t have the extra spin like Scottie, but it’s coming out higher and softer.”
Scottie Scheffler’s unique approach and its impact on his game
Hitting a high, spinning shot with a shortened swing and less grip isn’t something most players even attempt.
Scheffler has built his reputation around iron play, consistently ranking among the best over the past three seasons.
To maintain that level of consistency, mastering those in-between shots is essential. And as Gerard pointed out, Scheffler has clearly done just that.
It’s possible that this particular shot – the one he relies on between standard yardages – is what truly sets him apart from everyone else in the game.
