Zico has proposed a clear test for Neymar Jr. as debate grows over whether the Brazil star should return to the national team ahead of the FIFA World Cup.

The suggestion comes after Neymar was left out of recent friendlies, raising fresh questions about his readiness.

For Zico, the answer lies not in reputation, but in consistency.

Zico proposes Santos test to assess Neymar’s World Cup readiness

Zico explained his view when asked about Neymar’s place in Brazil’s 2026 World Cup squad.

“It depends on how Neymar is. Put him to play 10 games in a row for Santos, and then you can make an evaluation,” Zico suggested.

The idea focuses on match rhythm and physical durability rather than past achievements.

It also sets a measurable benchmark for selection.

Zico raises concerns over Neymar’s fitness and injury history

Zico also pointed to a lack of sustained game time as the key issue behind Neymar’s situation.

“But in the last two or three years, what was the period that he played that amount of games? He didn’t have it,” he continued.

Zico concluded, stating: “That’s the problem, it’s his health. And he has had his injury problems made easier. Injuries increased.”

The concern shifts the debate away from talent and toward availability. It also highlights how fitness, not ability, could ultimately decide Neymar’s World Cup fate.

That is the standard Zico believes Neymar must meet before returning.
