Premier League-linked Marseille midfielder Maxime Lopez has no regrets about turning down a move to Liverpool earlier in his career despite the recent success enjoyed by Jurgen Klopp’s Reds, speaking to RMC Sport.

While L’OM have enjoyed a 2019/20 season to remember, qualifying for the Champions League after a seven year absence while finishing second in Ligue 1, they cannot compete with the standards set by this irrepressible Liverpool side.

When ‘Project Re-start’ gets underway, the Merseyside giants could secure their first ever Premier League trophy – at the home of bitter rivals Everton, no less – just 12 month after becoming European champions for the sixth time.

But, even if he could turn back the clock, Lopez would not change his decision to snub a move to Anfield.

“(Liverpool) did everything to get me to sign,” the 22-year-old playmaker says. “I thought a lot but, today, I no longer regret (the decision). I made the right choice.”

Lopez, a tempo-setting midfielder who has adapted brilliantly to a deep-lying role under Andre Villas-Boas, could make a belated switch to England this summer with cash-strapped Marseille under pressure to raise funds.

According to Estadio Deportivo, Jose Mourinho has told the Tottenham board that he wants the talented Frenchman at Spurs.

Liverpool have not made many mistakes in the transfer market of late. But if Lopez goes on to shine at a direct top-flight rival, Klopp and co may end up wishing they had done more to change his mind.
