Bryson DeChambeau has had a wild Open Championship so far.
He got himself in contention through 36 holes, moving to within a shot of the lead. But the R&A docked him two shots for improving his lie in the rough on the fifth hole. DeChambeau attempted to protest this decision until late in the evening, to no avail.
Rory McIlroy called DeChambeau performative, other players rushed to his defence, and he responded on the golf course with a round of 69 to go into the final day four shots back of the leading Sam Burns.
But if you thought the controversy was done there, you’d be sadly mistaken. DeChambeau again kicked up a fuss after Saturday’s play with a request to the R&A, which was quickly dismissed.

Bryson DeChambeau requests Friday scorecard after round three of The Open
After his third round at The Open, it looked like it might all be happening again with DeChambeau.
Ewan Murray reported that DeChambeau was having an “animated conversation” with R&A chief executive Mark Darbon in the tournament offices after he finished his Saturday round.
Was Bryson DeChambeau's penalty unfair?
He was penalised two shots following an incident on the fifth hole…
It turns out, for reasons unknown, that he was requesting to see his scorecard from his second round. This request was promptly denied by the R&A.
DeChambeau clearly isn’t getting his way with the R&A this week, who are engaged in a week-long feud with the two-time US Open winner.
Bryson DeChambeau declines media on day three of The Open
DeChambeau hasn’t spoken to the media at a major championship this year since The Masters, and even through all of this controversy he hasn’t given a statement.
In a bizarre series of events, after he was given his penalty he went to the practice range and hit balls until it was pitch black, and was watched by a number of media members. He offered them almonds and beef sticks, but wouldn’t give an interview.
The media chased him up after day three, for both the almonds and an interview.
Kevin Van Valkenburg posted to X: “Bryson strolled by media again on his way to the range. ‘How is everyone doing?’ he said. ‘You know, we never got those almonds you promised,’ I said.
“He chuckled. ‘Do you want to chat tonight?’ I asked as a follow up. He kept on walking.”
DeChambeau’s issues clearly aren’t solely with the R&A. There’s been an issue with the media for months, and that’s bled through this entire controversy.
