Jack Nicklaus and Seve Ballesteros, two giants of the game from different sides of the Atlantic, were always likely to create a bit of buzz when paired together. And that is exactly what happened during the 1994 Turespana Masters.

Nicklaus, by then well into his 50s, was joined by a 36-year-old Ballesteros who was still firmly in his prime.

The pair had amassed an incredible 23 majors between them at that point and were more than equipped to handle the challenges of Montecastillo.

Even so, it was not all smooth sailing. The duo attracted plenty of attention, but there were still moments of frustration – most notably from the ever-spirited Ballesteros.

One of the notable details about the 1994 Turespana Masters was that it was played on a course designed by Nicklaus himself.

Montecastillo, known for its length and challenging layout, stood out among the venues of that era.

The course’s difficulty was not just down to distance, though. Its hilly terrain and the long walks between holes added to the challenge.

After posting an opening round of 70, Ballesteros did not hold back in expressing his feelings about how demanding he found the layout.

“I feel like I’ve played 24 holes,” Ballesteros remarked at the time.

A report from that day highlighted just how slow play had become. Ballesteros, Nicklaus and Miguel Angel Jimenez took four hours and 45 minutes to complete their round, while others were averaging around four hours and 11 minutes.

Looking back now, with pace of play still a hot topic in golf, it is clear these issues have been around for quite some time.

The respect Seve Ballesteros and Jack Nicklaus had for each other

There is no doubt about the stature of Ballesteros and Nicklaus. Both are firmly among the greatest to ever play the game.

But looking back, it is notable that neither player added another major title after arriving at that tournament, with 23 combined between them.

Even more so considering what they said about each other at the time.

“I admire his concentration. He’s been the best under pressure over the last 20 years. I would not be surprised if he won a major this year,” Seve said of Jack.

Nicklaus, on the other hand, thought Ballesteros still had plenty left in him.

“In my opinion he’ll win a lot more tournaments. He’s going to be fine. He’s 36, isn’t he? He’ll be at his peak. What I admire most about him is that he’s a fierce competitor and he has the ability to make shots happen when he needs them.”
