The son of Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney was spotted wearing a full West Ham United goalkeeper kit with Adrian on the back.
Wayne Rooney with son Kai
Rooney’s young son Kai was pictured wearing the full Hammers ‘keeper kit emblazoned with Spaniard Adrian’s name and number on the back in a video posted by Coleen Rooney on Instagram.
The video only served to fuel speculation that Rooney could be set for a summer move to East London, as reported by the likes of Sky Sports.
Rooney’s son sporting a Hammers kit has raised eyebrows given his dad is a Manchester United legend, the family allegiance is with the England star’s boyhood club Everton and the fact Adrian has lost his place to Darren Randolph this season.
But is the real reason simply down to Adrian performing one of the most iconic moments of the last decade against the Toffees back in 2015?
It was then, in an FA Cup third round replay at Upton Park, that Adrian wrote himself into West Ham and English football folklore when the game finished 2-2 at the end of extra time in a pulsating encounter.
With the scores at 8-8 on penalties, Everton ‘keeper Joel Robles missed and his compatriot Adrian stepped up to the spot, confidently removed his gloves and threw them to the floor as he ran up to blast the ball past his opposite number.
Was this the iconic moment which made Kai Rooney a fan of Hammers ‘keeper Adrian
He then wheeled away in celebration and slid on his knees, instantly becoming a cult hero to Hammers fans and no doubt young football-mad children like Kai all over the country.
If that is the case, then credit to Rooney for letting his boy wear another team’s kit.
Hammers fans will be hoping Kai can persuade his dad to join Slaven Bilic’s side this summer – perhaps on the proviso his favourite player is restored to the number one spot!
