‘The question now is’: BBC pundit comments on Leeds United

Garth Crooks has raved about Leeds United on BBC Sport following their performance against Liverpool at the weekend.

The former Tottenham Hotspur and West Bromwich Albion forward, who now works as a pundit for BBC Sport, was impressed with Leeds in their 4-3 defeat at the hands of defending champions Liverpool away from home at Anfield in the Premier League this past Saturday evening.

Crooks has praised the performance of Leeds, but he has also asked whether Marcelo Bielsa’s side can turn such good displays into points.

Crooks wrote on BBC Sport: “What a way to reintroduce yourself to the Premier League after 16 years. I’ve never seen a side come up from the Championship and go toe-to-toe with Liverpool as Leeds United did on Saturday. This was at Anfield and not Elland Road, by the way.

“I thought Leeds were magnificent. The question now is: Can they turn performances like this into points? It needed another inspired performance from Mohamed Salah to get the title holders out of trouble.

“If other teams can take games to Liverpool in the same way Leeds did, then we are in for one hell of a season.”

Staying confident

Leeds could have been better defensively against Liverpool, especially in the final 10 or so minutes of the match.

However, the Whites’ fans should be confident, as the way they took the game to the Reds and made them work hard was superb.

Leeds have a good squad, and with Bielsa in charge, the West Yorkshire outfit should be confident about a successful season in the Premier League.

Meanwhile, former Tottenham and Aston Villa striker Peter Crouch has said that Leeds will be the club who will miss not having fans the most in the stadium.

Crouch told The Daily Mail: “Definitely Leeds. I played at Elland Road a few times and, I mean this in the most respectful sense, it was horrible. The fans make it an ordeal for visiting supporters and I can remember the buzz there for Marcelo Bielsa’s first match against Stoke two years ago.

“In the Premier League, the intensity would have been even greater and would have given them such a lift. It’s hard to put a points tally on what their supporters would be worth but I can assure you a full Elland Road would make a positive difference.”
