Jamie Carragher has claimed that Ryan Sessegnon ‘lacks a bit of self-belief’ at Tottenham Hotspur, as he told Sky Sports PL.

The 21-year-old started Tottenham’s 3-2 win over Manchester City on Saturday and Carragher thinks ‘the quality is there’ with the player.

Last time out, when Spurs were outclassed by Wolves, Sessegnon was hooked off before half-time by Antonio Conte.

Despite that moment to forget for the Englishman, his manager still kept faith in him and started him at the Etihad for the following match.

Sessegnon produced a strong performance against the Premier League champions and Carragher shared his thoughts on the player.

“It looks like he lacks a bit of self-belief sometimes Sessegnon,” said Carragher.

“In the last game (Wolves), he was taken off early before half-time. It’s always tough for any player. A young player.

“It hasn’t quite happened for him yet. But the quality is there, we have seen that. He is just lacking in self-belief.”

It didn’t help Sessegnon’s matters when he had to endure an injury-ravaged start to life at Spurs.

Mauricio Pochettino was the man in the dugout when he was signed up from Fulham in 2019.

During that period, the versatile player has only played 23 matches for the north London club.

To put that into perspective, Emerson Royal, who only joined in the summer, has already played 27 games.
