Tim Sherwood told Premier League Productions that Thiago Alcantara isn’t ‘giving any support’ to his Liverpool teammates from a defensive standpoint.

The former Premier League title winner stated Thiago is a ‘fantastic’ footballer but he’s not helping his currently struggling backline.

Over the weekend, Liverpool shipped four goals at home to Manchester City to lose their third consecutive home game.

With midfielders playing centre-back and the more forward-thinking Thiago in the middle of the park, Sherwood thinks it’s something which just isn’t working.

“I am not sure if it’s two central defenders playing centre-back, which is a problem,” said Sherwood.

“The problem is you have a player like Thiago, who is brilliant, fantastic footballer and a technician.

“But he’s not giving any support. There is no cover or security. Whereas Fabinho and Henderson, they will be on the inside shoulder.”

It has been a number of worrying weeks for those on Merseyside as they will feel their title challenge is now hanging by the smallest of threads.

Liverpool have no choice but to look over their shoulder now because they have a number of teams gunning for those Champions League positions.

Third-placed Leicester are three points ahead of the Reds in the table and it will be interesting to see if Jurgen Klopp throws in one of his new January recruits to add some much-needed balance to this side on Saturday.
