Antonio Conte’s comments on Wednesday night left Tottenham fans worrying about his future – but he has explained why he reacted so badly in Friday’s press conference ahead of Saturday’s game against Leeds United.

Conte questioned his own future at Tottenham on Wednesday night after a 1-0 defeat at Turf Moor to Burnley. It comes after a 3-2 win over Manchester City on Saturday evening, a win that was seen as a kickstart for Spurs.

Many Spurs fans were left worried for Conte and his future after his comments. But he has since spoken to Daniel Levy, and the chairman has underlined his important to the club – and the work he is doing at Spurs.

He gave further details on why he reacted so badly – to the extent in which he said he would be happy to take his salary and go. Conte explained that he is a perfectionist and while the project is long-winded, he wants to win.

“The club confirmed to me that they know the reality. The club is very happy about my work and what we’re doing with my staff, the change that we made in four months in the environment,” Conte said.

“I think the club is appreciating very much what we’re doing in this moment. The problem is that I’m a perfectionist. I’m a person that wants to get to a result quickly,” the ex-Chelsea and Inter Milan manager added.

Conte: ‘Problem’ as a perfectionist will hold Tottenham in good stead

While it may frustrate the Italian at the moment, and over the course of the next few months, Conte’s personality as a perfectionist is just what Spurs need. It will get the best out of Tottenham in the years to come.

Of course, that means Conte will probably have to remain at the club beyond the summer of 2023 to make it work. Will he sign a new deal? Perhaops, but only if he sees signs of progression over the next 18 months.
