Writing in a Q&A for The Athletic, Alan Shearer has gone out to bat for Joe Willock after one fan questioned his recent performances.
An Arsenal fan asked Shearer about Willock and the idea that he’s an unrefined player, and he Newcastle legend was more than happy to hit back at that claim.
Indeed, Shearer questioned whether or not this fan had been watching Willock, stating that he’s been a very important player for Newcastle and that the potential is there for him to go on and become something special.

Shearer defends Willock
The pundit spoke highly of the midfielder.
“I’m not sure if you’ve seen him recently Karuk? He’s played a big part in the way Eddie Howe’s team have gone about their business this season. He’s young and yes he still has improvements to make, but he’s got to move forward with the rest of the team. He’s got to make himself a regular. But the potential is there. I like him,” Shearer wrote.
Every chance
Joe Willock may not be one of the best players in the Premier League right now, but as Shearer says, the potential is there within him, and he’s working under a manager who knows how to unlock a player.
If Joelinton and Miguel Almiron can establish themselves as vital components in a team challenging for the top four, why can’t Willock become one of the best in the Premier League?
Of course, it’s easier said than done, but you’d have to be a fool to write off any Newcastle player who is working under Eddie Howe at the moment.
Simply put, Howe is working miracles with some of his players, and there’s reason to believe that Willock could follow that same trajectory.
