Writing on The Player’s Tribune, Leeds United star Raphinha has opened up on the extent of his injury last season.

The Brazilian missed a number of games towards the end of the last campaign after picking up a problem against Manchester City.

At the time, we had very little idea about how serious that injury was, but now the Brazilian has shared just how much pain he was in at the time.

What’s been said?

The winger shared insight into his injury problems.

“The pain was so bad that I had to be given anaesthesia. I couldn’t walk. I couldn’t even get into the car,” Raphinha wrote.

“Apparently I had something called internal haematoma. The doctors said I needed surgery to remove all the blood. I had never had surgery before.

“They also said I would miss the rest of the season, though sometimes it felt as if I was gonna lose my leg. Thank God, they never found a blood clot, as they had feared. I stayed there overnight on painkillers and medicines. The next morning I went home, and after three days I could put the crutches aside.”

Scary

This is genuinely one of the most frightening stories we’ve heard from a footballer about an injury.

From the outside looking in, all we really hear is that a player has a problem and our main focus is the fact they’re not going to play at the weekend, but the reality is that these injuries can be very serious.

Look at someone like Gabriel Batistuta, the injury problems he suffered during his career still affect him to this day, but at the time, nobody really thought much of it.

All we can say is that we’re so glad Raphinha’s issues are behind him and that he had the best doctors working with him to get him back on the pitch as soon as possible.

Luckily, Raphinha is back to his best, and his goal at the weekend against Everton proved that.
