Kenny McLean has claimed that Norwich knew Leeds fans can be on the side of their team, but they were also aware that ‘it could be the other way’ and they can turn, as he told BBC Sport.
The Norwich midfielder was left annoyed that his side didn’t do enough to beat Leeds at Elland Road on Sunday.
In the 90th minute, McLean would have had the Leeds fans sunken right into their seats when he equalised for his side.
But Leeds left it very, very late, with Raphinha and Joe Gelhardt combining to score a dramatic winner.
After the game, McLean slammed Norwich’s first-half performance and also shared his thoughts on the Leeds fans.
“Did we do enough to win the game? No,” said McLean. “We didn’t underestimate how big it was. It was a big game.
“A lot of times we’ve used the word passive this season, and in the first half, we were again.
“We know the fans can be on their side but it could be the other way. They were the best team in the first half. To lose that goal at the end was tough.”
Albeit mathematically Norwich still have a fighting chance to survive, this should surely confirm that they are heading back to the Championship.
Whilst Dean Smith and his players will feel deflated, the mood around Yorkshire is going to be very, very different.
Only on Thursday night, the Leeds fans were fearing the worst after Aston Villa rocked up to Elland Road to beat them 3-0.
But yesterday’s win, the first under Jesse Marsch, and the manner of victory will provide the club with hope that they can now survive.
