Tottenham Hotspur star Eric Dier has had a wretched 2019.

Eric Dier of Tottenham Hotspur arrives for pre-season training at Tottenham Hotspur Training Centre on July 08, 2019 in Enfield, England.

Tottenham Hotspur star Eric Dier was not named in the England squad yesterday.

If he had been, there would have been outcry, and rightly so. Dier would have been picked on prior contribution, rather than efforts this season.

Dier has not yet played a single minute for Spurs.

There are multiple reasons for this. Dier has been struggling with both his health and fitness throughout 2019.

This saw him make just 18 Premier League starts last year and just two in the Champions League.

When he did play in the second half of the season, it was so irregularly that he was not at his best.

He missed a stretch of pre-season too, and added competition for places in central midfield has seen Dier fall right down the pecking order.

It is debatable whether he is in front or behind teenager Oliver Skipp at present.

Fortunately for Dier he is versatile, and this is set to give him a fresh chance.

The Telegraph report Dier could play at right-back this weekend against Arsenal, due to injury problems.

While this could backfire, Dier has played there before and Spurs have few options.

This could be just the pick-me-up he needs to kickstart his season.

Dier missing out on the England squad was inevitable. He needs to hope now that he has hit rock bottom, and his fitness and health struggles are behind him.

The only way from here should be up, and its time for Dier to start reminding fans how good he is.
