Speaking on The Overlap, Jamie Carragher has been discussing some of Spurs’ defensive issues.
Spurs have been leaking goals lately – especially in the first-half of games, and according to Carragher, Tottenham’s problems don’t lie within their tactics, he thinks their personnel is to blame.
Indeed, the pundit claimed that he’s not sold on Clement Lenglet or Davinson Sanchez, stating that Cristian Romero is the only Tottenham defender that he considers to be ‘top-drawer’.

Carragher praises Romero
The Sky pundit discussed Romero while he was critiquing the Spurs backline.
“His plan is about not being able to score against them and having quality at the other end of the pitch. It is too easy to score against them. I don’t think they have the quality of defenders. Davinson Sanchez coming in, Lenglet I’m not sure about him. Romero looks like the only one who is top-drawer. Eric Dier made a big mistake but he’s done ok under Conte,” Carragher said.
Not been amazing
Romero’s quality has been there for all to see at times. Especially when he’s on international duty, but he’s not been outstanding for Tottenham by any stretch of the imagination.
In certain games, he looks absolutely impossible to get past, but in others he seems to be erratic and rash, allowing for errors and unnecessary disciplinary issues.
The reality is that a centre-back is usually only ever as good as the players partnering him, and sadly, Romero isn’t in a position where he can fully shine in this Spurs team.
Tottenham need to plug this problem area in the January or summer transfer windows if they want to be challenging for major honours, because right now, they’re far too easy to score against.
