Tiger Woods is the greatest golfer to have played the game in many fans’ eyes.
Sure, Jack Nicklaus won more majors than Woods, but the 50-year-old leads the Golden Bear in almost every other metric.
While Woods’ iron play was majestic throughout his prime years, his incredible putting, especially under pressure, was what separated him from the rest.
If you needed to pick someone to hole a six-foot putt to save your life, Tiger Woods would be right at the very top of the list.
Woods produced a whole host of iconic shots throughout his remarkable career.
However, the amount of putts he holed when he really needed them was the reason why he won 82 PGA Tour titles, including 15 major championships.
Jason Day tops Tiger Woods’ best putting season by 0.2 shots per round
Woods dominated with his approach play during his prime, with four of his best seasons featuring inside the top-five all-time list.
However, he was bettered by four different golfers throughout his career on the greens.
Despite Woods’ brilliance on the greens, his best ever strokes gained putting season in 2004 is only ranked fifth on the all-time list.
Woods gained 0.98 strokes per round on the greens in 2004, and interestingly, he didn’t win a single major championship that year.
That strokes gained total with the putter was a full 0.2 shots per round worse off than Jason Day‘s season on the greens in 2016.
Day gained 1.18 strokes on the field with the putter in every single round he played on the PGA Tour 10 years ago.
That is quite remarkable when you consider that would have added up to 4.72 strokes gained on the field on average in every event he played.
Three more putting seasons which eclipsed Tiger Woods’ best
Matt Fitzpatrick is second on the list, after gaining 1.04 strokes on the field on average per round with the putter back in 2020.
The Englishman is an incredibly streaky putter and as you can see from his stats in 2020, he can get seriously hot with the flat-stick.
Then we have Denny McCarthy, one of the PGA Tour’s best putters, who gained 1.02 strokes putting on average in 2020.
He has only been ranked outside the top four in strokes gained putting twice since 2018 (14th and 22nd).
And then in 2009, Luke Donald recorded the same total as McCarthy on the greens, ending the season with an average of 1.02 strokes gained putting.
Donald is one of the best putters to have ever graced the game, and his fine work on the greens played a key role in the Englishman reaching number one in the world rankings in May 2011.
