- EXCLUSIVE from Graeme Bailey
HITC understands that Roberto De Zerbi played a key role in Marseille’s deal to sign Mason Greenwood from Manchester United.
Mason Greenwood, who came through the club’s youth academy and made his breakthrough under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, has not made an appearance for Manchester United since 2022.
The English forward was arrested in 2022 but the case was dropped. However, following an internal investigation, the Red Devils deemed it would be best for the English striker to spend the 2023/24 season on loan at La Liga side Getafe.
Greenwood showed a good return to form following two years out with eight goals and six assists for the Spanish side Getafe, which has led to interest in the forward from across Europe.

Greenwood agrees Marseille move and is set for a medical
HITC revealed earlier this week that Marseille have Greenwood booked in for a medical this weekend, after the club agreed terms with United last week.
Greenwood had been considering options over his future with Italian giants Lazio and Juventus also understood to have made approaches, whilst Atletico Madrid had shown an interest but only on a loan deal. United, however, wanted a permanent deal.
A move to Marseille is set to be a fresh start for the Englishman in yet another new country and he will be hoping to become a star at the French giants.
Greenwood was given a heroes welcome by fans of the French club in a video on X and he is understood to be closing in on a move.
For United, as a homegrown player Greenwood represents pure profit for the Red Devils and that deal is set to go through this weekend, with Greenwood close to agreeing terms on a five-year deal.
Roberto De Zerbi’s role in Greenwood deal explained
Roberto De Zerbi departed Brighton & Hove Albion this summer and has taken over at Marseille.
De Zerbi did a superb job at the AMEX Stadium and the signing of Greenwood represents the first major signing for the Italian.
HITC can reveal that De Zerbi’s talks with Greenwood in the past week have played a huge part in persuading the England international to opt for the Stade Velodrome.
If the Englishman can rediscover the form he showed at Old Trafford, which he did at Getafe with Antoine Greizmann full of praise for the forward, he could be a superb signing for the French side.
