Derek McInnes has elected to snub Rangers’ approach.
Rangers have suffered a body blow in their managerial pursuit after Derek McInnes snubbed their approach.
Speculation had been ongoing for weeks regarding McInnes joining the Ibrox club, who sacked Pedro Caixinha in October.
Last night McInnes sought to put the Rangers saga to bed, by admitting he had considered a move but decided against it.
McInnes told Aberdeen’s official website: “I’ve had a lot to consider over the last couple of days and I appreciate it’s been a testing time for everyone, including my family, and I’m pleased to be now totally focusing on purely on on-the-field matters.”
Dons chairman Stewart Milne added: “I personally am delighted that Derek has decided to remain with the Club and everyone looks forward to putting the speculation of the past few weeks behind us and concentrating on matters on the park starting at Dens tomorrow evening.”
There is one problem with the statements, and it is quite a major one, and it is the timing.
It’s better late than never, but they should have been made officially like this a week ago.
Rangers did only make their approach this week, but the speculation has cast a shadow over McInnes and Aberdeen since October, and been impossible to ignore.
It completely detracted from Aberdeen’s last two games against Rangers, which they lost, and allowed the Gers to climb back above them in the table
McInnes should have nipped this in the bud weeks ago, and he lost a lot of respect from supporters for allowing it to drag on.
Now he will have to hope he is forgiven, and start showing the reason why he is a manager in so much demand.
