Manchester United youngster James Wilson did not score against Stoke, but he was able to demonstrate how he offers an alternative up front.
Manchester United handed youngster James Wilson a vote of confidence against Stoke, starting him ahead of Radamel Falcao.
The 19-year-old did not score in the 2-1 victory, but did enough to visibly demonstrate how he offers United a different outlet to the Colombian.
Wilson, making his first start in 2014/15, made three successful dribbles – with one carving out an excellent goalscoring chance for himself.
| Match | Passing Accuracy | On Target | Successful Final Third Passes | Key Passes | Dribbles | Mins Played | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| James Wilson | Man Utd vs Stoke | 76% | 0 | 3 | 0 | 3 | 78 |
Wilson’s three dribbles compare favourably with Radamel Falcao’s season to date in this area – for he has made five in 283 minutes of football so far.
| Season | Passing Accuracy | On Target | Successful Final Third Passes | Key Passes | Dribbles | Appearances | Mins Played | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Falcao | 2014-2015 | 83% | 6 | 23 | 4 | 5 | 7 | 283 |
While Falcao has the experience, and physical attributes to be a more imposing striker in the penalty box than Wilson, the teenager should not feel that by failing to score he was unable to demonstrate his potential.
Wilson’s running can help United stretch defences, and also demonstrates why he can continue to be a good impact substitute for the Red Devils in future matches.
His finishing at under-21 level shows he will get goals if the opportunities keep on coming; and his difference in style to Falcao should ensure he carries on getting chances to shine.
