Conor McGregor has shared his thoughts on that viral MTV Video Music Awards incident with Machine Gun Kelly, opening up about it five years after the fact.
The footage made the rounds pretty quickly back then, showing McGregor on the red carpet and looking to get physical with MGK. Even with security stepping in, he still managed to toss a drink towards him.
In 2024, a video started making the rounds online again. This time, it was filled with praise for MGK’s response to what had happened.
Conor McGregor hadn’t previously explained what set him off, but that’s now changed.
The former dual-weight champion compared his situation with ‘MGK’ to boxing legend Terence Crawford bashing Ilia Topuria after attending UFC Freedom 250 on Sunday night.

Machine Gun Kelly’s remark is said to have angered Conor McGregor
He said he approached Megan Fox, who was with MGK at the time, and it was a comment from the musician that sparked things off. Speaking on The Ariel Helwani Show, he explained: “I thought he shouldn’t have kicked a man when he’s down, especially when you’re ringside.”
“That’s what happened to me and this Machine Gun Kelly guy that time. Not to say they are even the same, but just as a comparison.
“I’m at the VMAs. I walk out of the car. I’ve got the whiskey glass. I’ve got the gold cane. I’m only after the fresh break of my leg. I go, ‘Megan [Fox], how are you, darling?’ You’re always at the fights. I know you before I know that tick.
“And he says, ‘We don’t f— with you’. I said, ‘You don’t f— with me? You were ringside at the fight two days ago.’
“And he’s lucky he didn’t get his face broke badly there.” “If you’re ringside and you’re afforded that opportunity.” “I just found it a bit distasteful.”
When will Conor McGregor return to the octagon?
Conor McGregor is set to end his five-year absence from the octagon when he headlines UFC 329 in Las Vegas on July 11.
He’ll be taking on Max Holloway in a rematch of their 2013 featherweight clash, which McGregor won by unanimous decision despite tearing his ACL during the fight.
McGregor will be coming into this one as a clear underdog, especially with the bout taking place at welterweight, a significant jump from their original meeting.
The T-Mobile Arena will have its answer in three weeks. Will we see another win for McGregor, or can Holloway get his revenge?
