If Glasgow Rangers are serious about building for the future they must attempt to bring Harry Cochrane to Ibrox.

Rangers were gutted to lose Scotland youth international sensation Billy Gilmour in the summer as he was lured to England.

However Rangers have continued to try and build for the future, with teenage midfielder Jamie Barjonas handed a new deal this week until 2020.

The academy is Rangers’ route to success, given that they do not have the spending power Celtic do, with Brendan Rodgers’ side generating more income from Champions League and Europa League involvement.

That is why Rangers need to be alert to the best young players in Scotland and attempting to bring them in.

The Scottish Sun reported at the weekend that Leeds United are attempting to sign Hearts talent Harry Cochrane, with the 16-year-old already making his first team debut.

The best Scottish talent should ideally remain in Scotland at such a young age, and if Hearts are willing to cash in at the right price, Rangers should be making their pitch to bring him to Ibrox.

Losing the talented Gilmour to Chelsea was a big blow, but signing Cochrane would redress this loss.

The Gers’ current priority is to find a new manager, but once that is done, their efforts should be put towards trying to see if a deal can be done for Cochrane.
