This summer saw Tottenham Hotspur decide that Nabil Bentaleb was no longer needed at the club. Mauricio Pochettino had been using the Algerian international less and less and, with his fitness also a concern, decided it was best they moved him on.
He ended up joining Schalke 04 on loan to the end of the season with an option for the Gelsenkirchen club to buy him permanently.

Spurs fans were fond of Bentaleb, but given the competition for places at White Hart Lane it did make little sense for him to stick around.
What they didn’t want was for him to start shining in Germany. That is exactly what he has done.
The Algerian international has been in fine form for Schalke since his move and this tweet from stats site WhoScored shows he has been the best through ball provider in the Bundesliga this term:
Considering the wealth of technical talent at teams such as Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund among others this is no mean feat.
Add to that his three goals for the club in his last three appearances and Spurs fans will rightly wonder if he might have a long-term future back at the club.
Not if the German outlet Bild has their information correct. They claim that Schalke have the option to make the switch permanent for around £17m and will be doing so – signing the Tottenham talent on a four-year deal.
Spurs fans will hope this does not go down as a Nemanja Matic or Paul Pogba moment.
