Phil Foden is close to signing a new contract with Manchester City after another brilliant start to the season.

According to the Athletic, the 21-year-old winger is on the verge of penning new terms with the Premier League champions. Foden has flourished from an academy prospect to one of England’s most exciting talents.

Indeed, Pep Guardiola famously labelled Foden via Sports Illustrated as ‘the most talented player’ he had ever seen in 2019. And the Catalan manager’s comments have seemingly come true, with the England international a key player for City.

Moreover, as per the Daily Mail, Foden currently earns just £30,000-a-week. This wage will likely be tripled based on the playmaker’s form over the past 12 months. The youngster won the PFA Young Player of the Year award last season.

With Foden going from strength to strength, it’s a no brainer for City to hand the attacker a new deal. The 21-year-old was Man of the Match against Liverpool before the international break in a thrilling Premier League encounter.

And with the reigning Premier League champions looking as strong as ever, keeping Foden for the future will be crucial to City if they are to continue their dominance in the English top-flight as well as successes in Europe.

City have been smart with who they are awarding new contracts to. This summer saw Ederson Moraes, John Stones and Ruben Dias all sign long-term deals with the club.

With Foden now joining that list, Guardiola and the City board appear keen to retain the core group players together heading into the next three or four years at the Manchester giants.
