Shaka Hislop has slammed Cristian Romero for ‘flexing’ towards a Newcastle United player after making a challenge when Tottenham Hotspur were 5-0 down at St James’ Park on Sunday.
The former Newcastle United goalkeeper added that it was the ‘most ridiculous thing’ he had seen and it proves that the Tottenham players simply ‘don’t care’.
Only a few months ago, Cristian Romero experienced one of the greatest nights of his career when Argentina secured World Cup glory in Qatar.
Well, fast forward to the present, and the 24-year-old has just been a part of the most humiliating game of his career.
To be 5-0 down inside 20 minutes is beyond a joke – yes, Cristian Stellini has been booted out since – but all of this is beyond that.
Either way, amongst many woeful things produced on that day by Spurs, one moment from Romero didn’t sit well with Hislop, as he told ESPN.
“I honestly don’t think Spurs players are, at all, embarrassed,” said Hislop. “I don’t think they care at all.
“I thought this was hilarious during the game. There was a point during the game, it was 5-0, and Romero comes into the back of somebody. I can’t remember which Newcastle player it was. The referee blows his whistle. The player stays down and Romero stands over him, almost flexing.
“I am thinking ‘hold on. You are five down and you are posturing?!’ It said so much to me, at that moment – it’s the most ridiculous thing I have seen.
“If I am a footballer, and I am five down in the first half, then I am going about my business as sheepishly as possible. I have a certain amount of professional pride. I am not standing over anybody kind of glaring and flexing. That moment spoke so much to me.”

You would think returning from winning the World Cup would help elevate and take Romero’s game to the next level.
But it has been far from it for the no-nonsense centre-back, whose form has been very indifferent this season.
Some may point towards the mess around him and how many in the Tottenham XI aren’t at his level, but he also needs to take a look at himself.
