
January’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) is reportedly on the verge of being cancelled following internal discussions at the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
According to RMC Sport, the competition, which has already been pushed back once due to the COVID-19 pandemic, could be rescheduled again following the spread of the Omicron variant that is currently gripping the planet.
As per the report, international coaches are concerned about the safety of staff members and players, with Omicron likely to spread in Cameroon given the number of European-based players taking part in AFCON.
The news will come as a huge blow for the African nation, who have been anticipating the even for some time. However, for Premier League clubs, this breaking story will be music to their ears given how important some players are to teams. Namely Liverpool.
AFCON would have seen the likes of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Naby Keita depart the Premier League giants for potentially a month, with the trio missing big games for Jurgen Klopp’s side in the league.
