Speaking to ITV after England vs Austria, Gareth Southgate has expressed his concern for Liverpool full-back Trent Alexander-Arnold after he picked up an injury against Austria.
The England manager picked the full-back in his final squad on Tuesday, but on Wednesday Alexander-Arnold’s worst fears came true as he was forced off with an injury.
Southgate gave an immediate update after the game, and it doesn’t sound good.
What’s been said?
Southgate didn’t give a positive update after the match.
“We’re going to have a little look. It’s obviously not good to see him come off in the way he did, but we’ll just have to assess him over the next 24 hours,” Southgate said.
“No, I think thigh, but the medical team are still assessing it. We just have to see, it’s not a good sign to see him come off as he did, but we’ll know more after the next 24 and 48 hours.”
“Look, we don’t know the full extent, but as I said, the last thing you want is to see him come off in the way he did.”

Nightmare
Alexander-Arnold worked so hard to get back into Southgate’s plans, but less than 48 hours after being named in England’s final squad he’s picked up what seems to be a rather serious injury.
Of course, we have to hope that the defender’s issue isn’t all that problematic, but the fact of the matter is that it didn’t look good.
The Euros are just around the corner and it will be a race against time for the Liverpool man, but it’s hard to see how he’ll be ready in time for England’s first game in a fortnight’s time.
Hopefully, Southgate’s early diagnosis is wide of the mark and Alexander-Arnold has only picked up a minor knock.
