Surprisingly, the Tottenham Hotspur right-back is outperforming his Liverpool counterpart so far this season.

Kyle Walker may have been called up to the England squad as late injury cover but a number of surprising stats show the Tottenham right-back has actually been outperforming Nathaniel Clyne so far this term.

Indeed, many may still feel the Reds full-back is the man for the job as far as international duty is concerned, while numbers usually don’t tell the full story – is Walker good enough tactically, positionally… in any department apart from pace?

Nevertheless, the 25-year-old’s figures are certainly impressive, especially compared to Clyne’s…

As Opta stats show, Walker has – surprisingly – won both more tackles and interceptions than Clyne so far this Premier League season.

The Tottenham and Liverpool full-backs have both made 14 clearances but, when it comes to overall duels and 50/50 scenarios, Walker has again been more successful to date.

Going forward, meanwhile, the Spurs right-back has created more chances and won more dribbles than the 24-year-old, although Clyne has landed one more cross and far more final-third passes.

In terms of entering the final third, though, it is Walker who has shown more energy than Liverpool’s right-back.

It’s a crazy old game – many Tottenham fans will have criticised Walker over the past few months (and his form was at an all-time low last season), while Clyne’s praises have been firmly sung since his move to Liverpool.

But, statistically at least, Walker could even be arguing he should be first choice despite being called up so late.
