According to The Express, Edu’s job is under threat at Arsenal, and while it’s never nice to see anyone lose their job, we have to feel that the Kroenkes could be doing Mikel Arteta a favour by making this move.

In modern football, a good Sporting Director, Technical Director or Director of Football is just as important as having a good manager or a squad full of talented players, and sadly, the signs are there to suggest that this isn’t Edu’s forte, at least not at this level.

Edu now been in this job for two years, and he’s only really had one true success story out of all of his signings, and that’s Kieran Tierney.

The rest have ranged from overpriced arrivals such as Nicolas Pepe, underwhelming signings such as David Luiz or the outright ridiculous with Willian.

Even signings that he was lauded for at the time haven’t worked out all that well. Thomas Partey hasn’t hit the heights expected of him at the Emirates, while William Saliba is still yet to make his debut, two years after arriving for £27m.

Arsenal have the money to compete at the top-end. After all, they’ve spent over £350m since Edu arrived, and they’ve only gone backwards during that time.

Mikel Arteta has been lauded as a fantastic coach, but if Edu is giving him a squad that isn’t up to scratch, then what can he do?

Maybe the Spaniard’s fortunes will change if the Brazilian is replaced, especially if the rumours linking Ralf Rangnick to the club are true.

The Kroenkes haven’t made things easy for Arteta so far, but replacing Edu could be the biggest favour they do the Spaniard.
