Garry Monk’s side have had a great season, but they’ve had to take the rough with the smooth at times.
Chris Wood of Leeds United celebrates scoring his teams first goal
Life as Leeds United fan is pretty good right now, with the club currently sitting in fourth position in the Championship, and with a spot in the play-offs come the end of the season all but secured.
Manager Garry Monk has done a staggeringly good job at Elland Road, and thankfully for Leeds fans, their season has had a lot more highs than lows. With just eight games to play, here is Leeds’ highest point in the season so far, and their lowest.
Highest point – Leeds United 1-0 Sheffield Wednesday, 25/02/2017
Leeds went into this Yorkshire derby knowing that a win would not only give them the double over their rivals, but it would also strengthen their grip on a play-off spot at a time where it seemed like Wednesday’s play-off hopes were weakening. The Whites took the lead in the 25th minute through Chris Wood and in a hugely tense affair, it proved to be enough – though not without a scare. After Souleymene Doukara bundled over the Owls’ Sam Hutchinson in the box, the referee awarded a penalty in the 54th minute, only for Robert Green to tip Jordan Rhodes’ effort onto the post.
Leeds United Manager Garry Monk and Huddersfield Town Manager David Wagner clash before both being sent to the stands
Lowest point – Huddersfield Town 2-1 Leeds United, 05/02/2017
This Yorkshire derby however, didn’t go so well. With the opportunity to leapfrog Leeds, Huddersfield took the lead through Izzy Brown, before Chris Wood levelled matters. It seemed like the spoils would be shared, however in the 89th minute, Aaron Mooy’s shot fell into the path of Michael Hefele, who struck to secure the win for Town. The goal promoted bedlam from Huddersfield manager David Wagner, who sprinted to celebrate with his players. On his jog back though, an incensed Monk deliberately blocked his path, causing a fracas which resulted in both managers being sent to the stands, and both later receiving touchline bans and fines.
