Danny Murphy has claimed that only Tottenham striker, Harry Kane, would get into Chelsea’s XI, as he told talkSPORT.
The former midfielder claimed that Tottenham and Chelsea’s meetings this season showcases ‘the gulf’ between the two sides.
For the fourth time this season, Chelsea beat their London rivals, this time a 2-0 win at Stamford Bridge.
It was the first Premier League defeat of Antonio Conte’s Spurs reign, but his third against his former club in all competitions.
Whilst Spurs had Heung-Min Son and Cristian Romero missing from their XI, the likes of N’Golo Kante didn’t start the match, whilst Timo Werner, Kai Havertz were unused substitutes, as Ben Chilwell and Reece James didn’t feature.
Nonetheless, this is what Murphy had to say about the difference in quality between Tottenham and Chelsea’s squad.
“If you look at the Tottenham line-up,” said Murphy. “You could argue that probably only Harry Kane would be anywhere near the Chelsea side.
“When he (Conte) is talking about a huge gap between Spurs and Chelsea. They didn’t have the likes of Werner, Havertz, Kante, Alonso, Loftus-Cheek and Christensen in the side (XI).
“And those half dozen, you would argue that they would get into the Tottenham side, so the gulf in quality is there.”
Given his form this season, some may argue that Kane doesn’t get into Chelsea’s XI now because his performances have fallen off a cliff.
After being the Premier League’s top-scorer and assist-maker last season, the England captain is hitting nowhere near those numbers now.
There was well-documented noise about Kane’s future in the summer, and in this current state, Manchester City won’t probably even give him a look now.
But Kane only has himself to blame and perhaps more respect needs to be put on Jose Mourinho’s name for getting so much out of him.
