Ilkay Gundogan has warned Liverpool that they still have to come to the Etihad after Manchester City were beaten in the Premier League on Saturday.
The Man City midfielder claimed that’s the ‘good thing’ regarding yesterday’s dramatic stoppage-time defeat to Tottenham, as he told BBC Sport.
The Premier League champions are six points ahead of Liverpool in the table – and the Reds have a game in hand.
That will be played against Leeds next week and, added with the two title contenders to play each other, if everything comes out the right way for Jurgen Klopp’s men, then they may well be level with their rivals heading into the final few weeks of the season.
Nonetheless, Gundogan understood the threat from Liverpool, but was keen to point out that they are still to visit Manchester.
“It’s not a situation that we’re not used to,” said Gundogan. “We know from recent years that Liverpool are always contenders.
“They’re always up there. We know they’ll try everything to make our lives as difficult as possible.
“The good thing is that they still need to come here to the Etihad, but there are still many games to go.”
For a number of weeks, and even months, it has seemed like the Premier League title race is heading towards one direction and one direction only.
But the Liverpool train just hasn’t stopped hunting down Guardiola’s side and it has now made life very interesting regarding the title race.
Whilst those from the Merseyside would have been boosted by Tottenham’s helping hand, they need to remember that they still need to get the job done.
Leeds have proven time and time again that they can go from the absolutely ridiculous to the utterly sublime in next to no time, which isn’t an ingredient Liverpool will like to face.
