Not many people can say they had a real influence on Tiger Woods picking up a golf club, but Lee Elder is one of them.

Tiger has always been open about how much his parents shaped his journey. Earl Woods, in particular, played a huge part in those early years, guiding him through the challenges that came with being an up-and-coming player of colour.

But even before Tiger made his mark, there were players who helped shape the landscape. Lee Elder was one of those names, someone who quietly changed things for everyone who followed.

Elder’s career wasn’t just about wins or losses; it was about opening doors that had long been closed. He broke ground so others could walk through more easily than he ever did.

And while many voices have played a role in shaping Tiger’s path over the years, it’s clear that Elder’s impact stands apart from the rest.

Lee Elder’s place in golf history is well established, and his legacy extends far beyond the fairways.

In April 2021, he was invited to hit the opening tee shots at The Masters. It was a fitting tribute to a man whose impact on the game still resonates. Elder passed away later that year, but his influence continues to be felt.

Reflecting on Elder’s role in shaping both the sport and his own path, Woods spoke about what it meant to see Elder recognised.

“He was one of the most charming people you could ever meet,” Woods said. “And he would just tell you exactly how it was going to go: ‘All right son, this is how it’s going to go.’ And that’s exactly how it went.

Looking back on Lee Elder’s time on the PGA Tour

He never managed to claim a major title during his career, with his best finishes being tied for 11th at both the US Open and the PGA Championship.

Even without a major win, Elder’s list of accomplishments is impressive.

He picked up four victories on the PGA Tour and added another 12 wins across various events during his playing days.

Elder turned pro in 1959 and was still winning tournaments on the senior circuit nearly three decades later in 1988. His longevity in the sport was clear.

In 2019, he was honoured with the Bob Jones Award, which stands as a fitting recognition of everything he contributed to golf over the years – something Tiger Woods has often acknowledged himself.
