Wout Weghorst intends to spend at least the remainder of the season with Wolfsburg and could sign a new contract, despite transfer interest from Newcastle, via quotes by Kicker.

The 29-year-old is now in the final 18-months of his terms at Volkswagen Arena. But he is yet to hold talks with Die Wolfe over a new deal after an underwhelming season so far.

Weghorst had failed to recapture his form from last term in the first half of the campaign. After scoring 16 goals in 34 Bundesliga games in 2020/21, he only has six in 15 this season.

Weghorst has also only offered one assist after he created nine last season. His efforts last term also helped cement a role in the Netherlands side and scored once during Euro 2020.

The striker is not the only Wolfsburg player to struggle this term, with Die Wolfe only 13th in the Bundesliga. They also have the fourth-worst attack with just 17 goals over 17 games.

Weghorst to stay at Wolfsburg, at least this season

Weghorst will look to enjoy a more prosperous 2022 after netting a hat-trick in a friendly with Paderborn. He is only eight goals shy of becoming Wolfsburg’s all-time top-scorer ahead of Edin Dzeko, who scored 66 times over 111 games to the Dutchman’s 59 in 115.

Newcastle are alert to Weghorst’s record with Wolfsburg and are interested in a transfer, Kicker report. But the forward is focusing on overtaking Dzeko and not moving to England.

“My full focus is on playing a good second half of the season here,” he said. “Ambitions are always there, I always want the maximum. I still feel very comfortable at VfL, even if the first half of the season was frustrating for me.

“I need eight more goals and then I’ll have achieved something nice here. That’s the goal.”

Newcastle could seal Weghorst transfer in summer

Newcastle could seal a transfer for Weghorst in the summer if he does not agree to sign a new contract with Wolfsburg, however. The striker does not rule out leaving Volkswagen Arena in the future and considers the Premier League an option.

“There are so many nice things or clubs,” he said. “Here, too, I can make my dreams come true. I’d like to win a trophy one day.

“I have not yet heard from the club that they want to extend with me. We agree that that wasn’t enough in the first half of the season. Both from the team and from me.”
