The German striker with a better goals record than Robin van Persie

Arsenal may be signing the wrong German! Mario Gomez is on fire.

Dutch striker Robin van Persie is setting all sorts of personal records at the moment, but can he catch Mario Gomez?

The Bayern Munich hitman scored four goals in 23 minutes last night against Basel, bringing his tally to 25 in 25 for the season.

But that’s not all. Look a little deeper and you will see he has scored an incredible 72 goals in 72 games.

Quite a record. That stat includes 11 hat-tricks over the past 17 months, including one he scored in a 7-1 win over Hoffenheim at the weekend.

Despite his form, Bayern Munich only sit second in the Bundesliga, five points behind Borussia Dortmund.

This season alone he has 25 in 25 games, which of course is some way to go to match Barcelona’ Lionel Messi who scored his 50th (!) goal of the season on Sunday night.

Robin van Persie is the best Premier League striker, outscoring Gomez this season, with 32 goals in 34.

But Gomez’ prolific rate has being going on for longer.

His 72 in 72 compares favourably with the Dutchman, who in his last 72 appearances has scored 58 times.

Of course this doesn’t prove anything, other than that they are two incredible strikers.

But often Premier League fans are so inward looking or only look to Spain for comparison, and Gomez does not get the recognition he deserves.

Arsenal are reported to be signing German forward Lukas Podolski, but imagine just how incredible a pairing Gomez and van Persie would make up front.
