’The game is beyond him’: Sky pundit says the game is too quick for Tottenham 26-year-old

Jermaine Beckford says Davinson Sanchez proved during Tottenham Hotspur’s 3-2 defeat to Bournemouth that the game was ‘beyond him’.

The former Premier League striker added that he can ‘understand’ the Tottenham fans booing Davinson Sanchez, before and after he was subbed.

The 27-year-old didn’t start the game, but he was brought on as a first-half substitute for the injured, Clement Lenglet.

There were mutters of boos from the home crowd when that happened, and then the player himself proceeded to be at fault for two goals.

Cristian Stellini then decided to bring the centre-back off after the hour mark and, once again, he was booed by his own fans.

Beckford suggested that the game was too quick for Sanchez, and whilst the booing was brutal, he understands it from the perspective of the fans, as he told Sky Sports News (19/04/23). 

“You are speaking to me like I have been subbed on and off,” laughed Beckford. “If you don’t start a game, it’s not really a reflection of you as a player. 

“But if you are subbed on and then subbed off again, it can only be for tactical reasons or you are just not good enough, at that moment. 

“I felt for Davinson Sanchez because, the moment he came on, you could tell, the game was beyond him. He wasn’t able to catch up with the pace of the game, it was beyond him. Everything went against him.

“He was at fault for two of the goals. When you get subbed off and the fans are applauding that, then it’s hard to take. Fans should stick with you through thick or thin. But I do see the other side of it because it has a been season full of frustrations.” 

END OF THE ROAD FOR SANCHEZ

In 2017, with Mauricio Pochettino in the dugout, Spurs paid Ajax big bucks for Sanchez’s talents.

But, under Pochettino, and several managers since, he has struggled to prove himself, so it’s no surprise the Spurs fans were deflated when he was brought onto the pitch against Bournemouth.

This has to be the end of the road for the player and it won’t be a surprise if he has played his last game, or he just heads for the exit door in the summer.
