Liverpool fans were quick to bring up another England legend in the wake of Lampard’s departure

Frank Lampard’s departure from Stamford Bridge has led to a touch of schadenfreude from Liverpool fans.
The legendary midfielder was consistently compared with Steven Gerrard during their playing days, and a succession of England managers wrestled with the problem of how to fit both into the same side.
It was inevitable, then, that the two would continue to be compared as they made their way into the world of management.
Lampard took his first managerial steps with Championship side Derby County in 2018, losing that season’s play-off final before returning to Chelsea as manager in 2019.

Gerrard also entered the world of management in 2018, taking the reins at Rangers. Despite finishing second in both of his first two seasons, there were clear signs of improvement at Ibrox.
Now, in his third campaign, they sit 23 points ahead of rivals Celtic at the top of the Premiership and have topped a Europa League group that featured Benfica, Standard Liege and Lech Poznan.
It’s been a less impressive campaign for Lampard, who was dismissed on Monday after a run of two wins in eight Premier League matches that saw Chelsea slip to ninth.
Gerrard remains an iconic figure at Anfield, and Liverpool fans were quick to pounce on the Lampard news.
The volume of tweets comparing the two saw Gerrard trend on Twitter.
His Rangers side have beaten Neil Lennon’s Celtic in both of their meetings this season, with the gap at the top of the league making it highly unlikely that Celtic will achieve their dream of winning a tenth successive title.
Rangers are next in action on Wednesday night when they face Hibs at Easter Road.
