Andy Murray stunned tennis fans by becoming Novak Djokovic’s coach at the end of the 2024 season.

Murray worked with the 24-time Grand Slam champion for half a year during a period which included his Australian Open semi-final appearance.

The Scot’s partnership with Djokovic did not bring any trophies, but it saw him dip his toe back into tennis after his retirement at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Murray has long been touted to be a fantastic tennis coach, due to his experience and understanding of the sport, and he named four rising players in 2022 that he would like to work with.

Who Andy Murray wanted to coach in 2022

In an interview with The Metro, Murray named Emma Raducanu, Jack Draper, Stefanos Tsitsipas, and Carlos Alcaraz as four players he would like to coach.

Explaining his picks, Murray revealed: “They work hard, they seem like they love the sport. Alcaraz and Tsitsipas haven’t won a slam yet. They’re obviously still very young, and I think they have the potential to do it.”

Of course, Alcaraz went on to win several Grand Slams in the intervening years under the guidance of Juan Carlos Ferrero.

The Spaniard has currently won six Grand Slams and has the chance to earn a Career Grand Slam at the 2026 Australian Open.

The other three have fared differently from Alcaraz.

Draper enjoyed a breakout season in 2025, which included his first Masters title at Indian Wells, but he is yet to win a Grand Slam.

The British star reached the US Open semi-final in 2024, but he’s widely considered a future Grand Slam champion.

Raducanu, meanwhile, has suffered from the fame of her incredible run to lifting the US Open title in 2021.

She has not challenged at the latter stages of big tournaments since her run at Flushing Meadows, but she has shown some signs of improvement in 2025.

Tsitsipas has reached two Grand Slam finals, and won the ATP Finals, but he’s slipped down the rankings throughout the years.

Andy Murray’s head-to-head record against the players he wanted to coach

Murray has played each of the three male players he said he wanted to coach, so he’s had the opportunity to see them up close.

The Scot met Alcaraz on two occasions on the ATP Tour, with Murray winning at Indian Wells and Alcaraz winning in Vienna.

Draper and Murray only met once officially, with the former managing to defeat his idol in straight sets at Indian Wells in 2023.

Murray and Tsitsipas met three times throughout their careers, with the Greek star leading the head-to-head with two wins.

Tsitsipas defeated Murray at Wimbledon and the US Open, while the Scot’s sole victory came at the Stuttgart Open in 2022.
