Ian Wright has expressed his worry at the lack of depth in Tottenham’s backline.
Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero are Tottenham’s starting centre-backs, with Eric Dier the current back-up option.
But if Ange Postecoglou has to turn to the 29-year-old, for one reason or another, then Ian Wright is worried by the ‘drop-off’, as he told Premier League Productions (09/10/23 at 2:35 pm).
Tottenham’s new man in the dugout has made his feelings about Eric Dier pretty clear from the off because he is yet to play a single minute this season.
It was only until Sheffield United at home last month did the 49-cap England star actually make a matchday squad for Spurs, if that doesn’t tell you everything, then nothing will.
As of this moment, he isn’t going to get that game time he craves, even from the bench.
You have to think that Eric Dier will head for the exit door in January, but until then, if he is called upon, then it’s going to be interesting to see how things pan out.

Eric Dier at Tottenham
“If anything happens to van de Ven and Romero,” said Wright. “Then that is a massive drop-off because it’s Dier to come in.
“But the fact is it’s Eric Dier. It’s the drop-off – when you look at it, that team can challenge.”

Eric Dier needs to leave in January
The versatile defender can’t argue too much because his form over the last few years has fallen off, just like Spurs’ decline.
There will be some fans who will argue that Dier should have left when Jose Mourinho was booted out.
But, come January, he has to make the call and leave the London club because he is just wasting his career not even making the matchday squad at times.
