Scottie Scheffler made a decision in 2024 that completely changed the trajectory of his career.

He was always known as an elite ball striker with incredible potential, but one glaring weakness in his game: his putting. The golfing world knew that if Scheffler ever figured his putting out, he’d explode. And that’s exactly what happened.

Scheffler changed to a TaylorMade mallet putter, and immediately took over the sport. He won nine times in 2024, and six times in 2025 to establish himself as the undisputed best player in the sport.

But by making this switch and having all that success, Scheffler has caused players up and down the PGA Tour to make some terrible mistakes.

The mistake PGA Tour players are making because of Scottie Scheffler

Because of the instant success Scheffler has had since switching putters, players on the PGA Tour are trying desperately to emulate him.

Every time a player is struggling with their putting, there is an outcry for them to change to a mallet. But it simply hasn’t been the joker in the deck for other players like it was for Scheffler.

Ludvig Aberg made the switch from a blade to a mallet, and has seen no improvement. If anything his performances have been worse since he switched.

Is the era of Scottie Scheffler dominance now over?

How concerned are you with his current form?

Brooks Koepka changed to the same mallet that Scheffler uses, and it looks so clunky in his hands. The club doesn’t suit his putting stroke, but the five-time major winner is sticking with it anyway.

Jordan Spieth has looked at changing, and before the John Deere Classic, Rickie Fowler is playing around with different putters like it’s the answer for him.

Scheffler has made the sport believe that the mallet is a silver bullet which can unlock new heights for a player. But it turns out, Scheffler is just really good with a mallet. It’s not for everyone.

Ludvig Aberg’s putting before and after using a mallet

Aberg’s putting was under a lot of scrutiny after the PGA Championship. His performance on the greens cost him a chance of the win, as he lost strokes to the field with his putting at Aronimink, and at Quail Hollow the week before.

He switched to a Scottie Cameron mallet putter for the Charles Schwab Challenge, and for a time it looked like he’d solved his putting woes. He gained over two strokes on the green during his first round with the new club, and gained strokes over his next three events.

But at the Travelers, Aberg came crashing back down to earth. The Swedish star lost a stroke to the field with his putting on his way to a T55 finish.

It looks like it wasn’t the putter’s fault after all.
