Tottenham Hotspur defender Jan Vertonghen is unlikely to be leaving any time soon, despite what his mum says.
Jan Vertonghen’s Tottenham Hotspur future has became a surprise topic of discussion this week after his mum claimed he could quit the club.
Speaking to Belgian radio station Studio Brussel, his mum Ria claimed her son was missing home. She said: “Jan is starting to miss home. I hear from him relatively often, around two or three times a week, for sure. I see him coming back home soon. We’ll see. That [where home is] depends. Home could also mean Amsterdam, I think. His girlfriend is from there. That may well be.”
This would perhaps be concerning, if he had not signed a new contract just a fortnight earlier.
Tottenham’s Jan Vertonghen during the press conference
At the beginning of December, Vertonghen signed an extended deal which ties him to Spurs until 2019.
This was not exactly a long term commitment from the centre-back, with teammates signing contracts until 2021, but Vertonghen perhaps just prefers to take it slowly.
His comments made upon signing a new deal should allay claims from his mum that he will be leaving ‘soon’.
Vertonghen told The BBC: “It’s a big relief. The future looks great so I’m very happy to be a part of it.
“This is an unbelievable group of talent. There’s a great buzz around Tottenham.”
Tottenham’s Jan Vertonghen after the game
There is nothing to say that upon expiry of his contract in 2019 he will stay, nor even that he won’t push for a move in 2018 when there is a year remaining and Spurs will try and extend his deal again.
But for now, for the immediate future and next two transfer windows at least, Vertonghen’s future should not even be an issue, and Tottenham fans should expect him to lead their defence as he has done since 2013.
