Phil Hay has outlined what Leeds United expect their January transfer window to look like, and it’s not good news for any fans expecting a flurry of signings.
The journalist was hosting a discussion on The Athletic, and as you can imagine, one hot topic that fans wanted to hear about was the January transfer window.
Leeds spent almost £100 million in the summer, but a recent centre-back injury crisis has highlighted how thin Marcelo Bielsa’s squad is in some areas. However, despite there being some rather obvious holes in the squad, Leeds reportedly aren’t planning to do much this month.
‘The club expect a quiet window. And Bielsa seems pretty happy with his options at left-back/CM. But the club do keep their eyes open and it would more be a case of moving for a good option which pops up rather than actively recruiting a player to make an immediate impact. They’re in really good shape and January is a difficult window,’ Hay wrote.
We can’t help but feel like Leeds should be a bit more proactive this month. However, we can understand why they don’t want to make many signings.
Marcelo Bielsa famously takes a while to bed in new arrivals, so anyone brought in this month wouldn’t be able to make a huge impact in any case.
Of course, this doesn’t necessarily mean Leeds will be doing nothing this month.
Phil Hay says that Leeds will move if a good option pops up, which echoes Angus Kinnear’s sentiment from a couple of weeks ago, so watch this space if a deal that is too good to pass up becomes available, which is very possible when you consider the financial issues that some European clubs are having through this pandemic.
Leeds aren’t expected to be incredibly busy, but they’re certainly a club to keep one eye on this month.
