The Christian Eriksen stat which exposes Tottenham teammates’ shortcomings

Tottenham Hotspur have been short of goals so far this season.

Tottenham have made a promising start to their Premier League season but a lack of goals has left them short in a key area – with one fact in particular a cause for concern for fans.

As Opta stats show, only two Tottenham players have scored more than once so far this season – one is holding midfielder Eric Dier. The other is Christian Eriksen, who – until Sunday afternoon – hadn’t netted all season and is yet to score from open play.

GoalsMinutes Played
Eric Dier2707
Christian Eriksen2362
Toby Alderweireld1720
Nacer Chadli1602
Dele Alli1412
Harry Kane1685
Erik Lamela1367
Ryan Mason1364
Son Heung-Min1218

Tottenham’s total goal tally of 11 is bettered by nine whole teams (and equaled by Crystal Palace). The fact the goals have thus far been shared out among Mauricio Pochettino’s squad is a positive but no individual has truly taken up the goalscoring mantle.

That, of course, has plenty to do with the lack of form of Harry Kane so far this term. But others would still need to have added more even then. Heung-Min Son has shown promise, while Erik Lamela has only just begun to show form, with Eriksen also sure to score more once he finds his full match fitness.

So far, though, as has been painfully obvious, Spurs need to show a little more in the final third. Take the four goals they scored against Manchester City away and that’s only seven in seven league games. But the City game showed exactly what Tottenham can do, it just needs to be repeated more often.
