In 2023, a group of A-list celebrities and sports stars got involved in Formula 1 by buying a stake in Alpine.

The French team, previously known as Renault, started life as Toleman in 1981, handing a debut to the legendary Ayrton Senna. Rebranding to Benetton in 1986, the team won world championships with Michael Schumacher before becoming Renault in 2002.

Fernando Alonso won his two titles with the Enstone-based team in 2005 and 2006, before rebranding to Lotus in 2012, and then back to the Renault name in 2016. In 2021, they became the Alpine team F1 fans know today.

Winning their only Grand Prix to date in Hungary in 2021 with Esteban Ocon, the team have fallen on hard times in recent years. Alpine finished bottom of the championship in 2025 and have shut down their Renault factory, becoming a Mercedes customer team.

Back in 2023, the team received some outside investment. A group of celebrities and athletes came together to form Otro Capital, who struck a 24% equity deal with Alpine, worth 200 million euros, or roughly £173 million.

The investors have been seen at multiple races since completing the deal. But who are the celebrities that have a stake in the Alpine F1 team?

Otro Capital’s A-listers include Hollywood actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, who are also the owners of Championship football club Wrexham. Fellow actor Michael B. Jordan is also involved in the Alpine ownership.

Golf superstar and 2025 Masters winner Rory McIlroy is part of the project and has been spotted several times in the F1 paddock at races. Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes and tight end Travis Kelce are also part of Otro.

Two-time former unified world heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua has a stake in Alpine, joining Otro in October 2023 alongside Real Madrid footballer Trent Alexander-Arnold. They have both injected heavy investment into the Enstone team.

Former Chelsea and Manchester United star Juan Mata is also involved, while former Tennis world number two Alexander Zverev makes up a whole host of big names investing in the Alpine project.

Christian Horner wants to buy Otro Capital’s stake in Alpine

While Otro have invested heavily in Alpine, they may not keep hold of their stake in the team much longer. Rumours have suggested that former Red Bull boss Christian Horner could be looking to buy the 24% share.

The Brit was axed by Red Bull in July 2025 and officially left the team in September. He is looking to return to F1 in 2026, but as a team owner, and he wants a share in said team.

Horner has been linked with multiple teams in the paddock, but Alpine have emerged as the favourite, given his close ties to Flavio Briatore. The Enstone outfit have confirmed talks have been ongoing with the 51-year-old, and he could look to buy out Otro’s stake.
