Despite their FA Cup defeat at the hands of Burnley, there were still some positives to take away for Sunderland.
It’s always horrible to lose a cup replay, because you just feel as if it was 90 minutes that didn’t have to be played. Unfortunately, that was the fate suffered by Sunderland in mid week at the hands of fellow Premier League side Burnley. Thankfully though there were a few positives to take away, with one being the performance of George Honeyman.
Honeyman, who was born just 20 miles outside of Sunderland, has been at the Black Cats for nearly four years now and continues to grow as a strong midfielder for the club. The 22-year-old looked like one of the only players in red and white with some quality against the Clarets, with fans and critics alike praising him for his performance.
It’s still early days in his Sunderland career, but given that he’s already 22 you would expect him to feature more prominently if Moyes wants to get a better idea of what kind of potential he has. It’s been a hard slog for George to break his way into the first team, but he represents all those players who cease their opportunity when it comes to them and make an impact.
Sunderland’s Stadium of Light
With Sunderland struggling so badly in the Premier League, not many people would blame Moyes for taking a chance and starting the midfielder in the coming weeks. His determined attitude and link up play could prove useful, and he may even start to grow into the all round player in the middle of the park that they so desperately need.
