Speaking on the Transfer Window Podcast, Duncan Castles has claimed that Graeme Jones could end up managing Newcastle until the end of this season.

The Magpies have just parted ways with Steve Bruce and Jones has been placed in charge on a caretaker basis.

However, despite the fact Newcastle have been linked with a plethora of new managers, Castles is led to believe that they could make an in-house appointment for the rest of the season.

What’s been said?

Castles was speaking about Newcastle’s managerial situation.

“They have a deputy, assist coach in Graeme Jones who can take over training and take over the team if need be. The explanation I had today was that it’s not impossible that Graeme Jones stays in charge for the entire season should the process of finding the manager take longer than they expect and should he do well in charge of the team. He’s quite experienced, he’s been an assistant to a number of coaches,” Castles said.

“That’s not to say he will run through the season, the brief I got today was that this was an open process, attention to detail is key, getting the right man is important and they don’t want to rush it just for the sake of change.”

If Newcastle just want to stay up this season, then this could be a very wise appointment.

Jones has been lauded as a brilliant coach and he already knows the Newcastle squad like the back of his hand.

Let’s say the Magpies looked to bring in someone like a Paulo Fonseca or Frank Lampard, they wouldn’t have a pre-season to get the team up to speed with their systems and they wouldn’t know any of the playing staff.

Jones is a familiar face and a talented coach and with the right additions in January, you have to imagine that he’d be able to keep the Magpies up.

This is certainly a situation to keep an eye on.
