Michael Owen thinks Illan Meslier is ‘low on confidence’ after he made yet another mistake for Leeds United following their 4-1 defeat to Bournemouth on Sunday.

Javi Gracia’s side found themselves 1-0 down after just 20 minutes, thanks to Jefferson Lerma’s brilliant curling effort.

But four minutes later, Illan Meslier was up to his old tricks, this time he failed to deal with a corner and ended up flapping it straight to Lemar for his second of the match.

From then on, It was a mountain to climb for Leeds, whilst they pulled a goal back through Patrick Bamford, they were always playing catch-up and proceeded to concede twice in the second half.

From his errors at Fulham recently to this costly mistake again, Michael Owen was critical of Meslier during such a delicate time of the season for the Whites, as he told Premier League Productions (30/04/23 at 3:00 pm).

“I think he is (Meslier low on confidence),” said Owen. “The two goals that you could have attributed the blame, not so long ago, were because he was almost flapping a little bit.

“There, he comes out again, palms the ball into the path of Lerma, who is quite the opposite, he has a lot of confidence after scoring that first goal.”

MESLIER IS OUT OF HIS DEPTH

The 23-year-old is still a young player, but Leeds can’t afford to be carrying a player that is still developing and has a lot of errors in him.

Leeds’ own style of play, their difficulties when defending is a struggle enough for them.

But to have your keeper handing out goals to the opposition on a regular basis is a big issue and it will play its part in the club going back down to the Championship.
